The Exquisite Corpse is a collaborative drawing approach first used by surrealist artists to create bizarre and intuitive drawings. It is like the old parlor game consequences – in which players take turns writing on a sheet of paper, fold to conceal what they have written, and pass it on to the next player. Since we are not in the same room, and maybe not even in the same time zone, we will play this online.
How do we play?
In the Submission Portal You will post either a plan view, section, illustration, or written prose that describes how you are braving through COVID-19. One entry is enough but you are definitely welcome to submit more than one entry.
After you submit your plan view, section, illustration, or written prose. Go to "I'm game" thread and say that you just submitted something. If you want to leave folks a clue on the contents of your contribution, you can.
What are the rules?
Do NOT submit your actual drawings/words here. The idea behind the game is that participants will have some idea - but not the whole picture - of what you submitted. Submit your entry through the portal.
For Plan Views: Your site can be whatever. a courtyard, a park, a whole city, anything in between | Rendered by hand, digitally, or both | Upload formats: .ai, .pdf or .jpeg. | Resolution: At least 300 ppi | Use a 1"=20' scale. Include a scale bar!! | Must be framed by two linear elements (fence, row of shrubbery, line of trees, etc.) The linear element will guide the stitching phase.
For Sections: Your site can be whatever. a slope, street, riparian buffer, anything | Rendered by hand, digitally, or both | Upload formats: .ai, .pdf or .jpeg. | Resolution: At least 300 ppi. | Use a 1"=20' scale. You can exaggerate height if you would like. Include a scale bar!! | Start your section with a mailbox. The mailbox will guide the stitching process.
For Sketches / Illustrations: Sketch can be anything at all. We only ask that you 'interrupt it' with two lines so that we can stitch it to other sketches | Your drawing can be rendered by hand, digitally, or both. Upload formats: .ai, .pdf or .jpeg | Resolution: At least 300 ppi.
For Written Prose: It can be anything. Go as technical or as absurd as you would like. There is a 1000-character limit | Begin your first sentence with a subject and a verb. | End your paragraph with a period, preceded with an adverb and comma.
Why are we playing?
Because of these unusual circumstances! During the shelter-in-place, we all feel the schism between being separate (social distancing, quarantine, distance learning) and being together (working on similar projects, being with family and housemates, experiencing health and financial impacts). This is unusual. This is important. This must be documented. This is why Lettus is launching the online Exquisite Corpse. Here, we can document what we individually and collectively experience, using narrative and communication tools we acquired at CED.
